WISDOM TEETH REMOVAL

YOU ARE IN EXCELLENT HANDS

It is possible that you may not yet have experienced problems with your wisdom teeth – but it is better to seek treatment prior to going through the pain of infected wisdom teeth.

Often it is smarter and easier to have asymptomatic wisdom teeth removed in your late teens prior to experiencing problems. Often problems go unnoticed and can require more extensive treatment if they are not treated early

5 REASONS FOR EXTRACTION

  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth – When there is insufficient room in the jaws for the wisdom teeth to erupt and then function normally.
  • Infection – A painful condition called “Pericoronitis” caused by infection around the crown of the wisdom tooth.
  • Dental Caries – Wisdom teeth can be difficult to clean, even if they are filled. There can also be issues with access by the dentist for restoration, compromising any filling placed and causing long term problems.
  • Orthodontic Reasons – When there is the danger of damage to other teeth due to insufficient space in the jaw as the wisdom teeth erupt.
  • Pathology – A cyst is a fluid filled sac that forms when the soft tissue that originally formed the wisdom teeth becomes enlarged. This can become infected.

THE CONSULTATION

After inspecting your mouth, your surgeon may recommend the appropriate treatment for you.

Often this involves the removal of one or more of your wisdom teeth. This is a very common procedure and shouldn’t be feared. You are in excellent hands with the team at Victorian Oral and Facial Surgeons.

The consultation is where all your pre-surgery questions will be answered by caring and qualified professionals.

Did you know that most wisdom teeth problems develop in people between the ages of 15 and 25.

Wisdom teeth are the third molar teeth that are found in both the upper and lower jaws. In younger people, those between the ages of 15 – 18, the roots of the wisdom teeth are often not yet fully developed and the jawbone is not as dense. Not only is it easier to remove the tooth at this time, but also the recovery period is often far shorter with less complications.

POSTOPERATIVE COURSE

What can you expect after the extraction of your wisdom teeth? Here’s a short post-surgery checklist to get you smiling again in no time:

  • Give yourself time to recover. Get plenty of rest. Avoid active sports and exercise, or the operation of heavy machinery. Take time off school, work, or other duties
  • Expect some swelling – this usually reaches its worst up to 72 hours post-operatively and takes 4 to 5 days to go down. Help to reduce it by applying ice packs to your cheeks.
  • Each person experiences pain differently – your surgeon will help you to manage your pain by prescribing medication and adjusting it according to your needs.
  • Of course, you will have stopped smoking 6 weeks before the surgery. Keep this up! Smoking increases the risk of postoperative infection and dry sockets.
  • Any bleeding should stop by the second day. Contact us if you have any excessive pain or bleeding.
  • We will schedule a post-operative visit 3-4 weeks after your surgery. This so that we can check on your healing.
